For the second consecutive year, the University of Washington has been ranked No. 25 on the Times Higher Education world rankings for 2018, released Tuesday. It is tied with the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The UW is also fourth among U.S. public institutions — behind UCLA, UC Berkeley and University of Michigan — a position it has held for the last two years as well.

“Our University seeks to have the greatest possible impact here in Washington and around the world. This kind of broad-based measure, looking at everything from teaching and research to a university’s international reach, is a great snapshot of the excellence of our faculty, students and staff, as well as the global reach of their work,” UW President Ana Mari Cauce said.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The rankings use 13 performance indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons that they say are trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.

The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment, primarily based on a reputation survey); research (including the number of papers published in the academic journals); citations (research influence, including the number of times a university’s published work is cited by scholars globally); international outlook (including the university’s ability to attract students and faculty from around the world); and industry income (knowledge transfer in terms of a university’s ability to help industry with innovations, inventions and consultancy).

This new ranking adds to the UW’s recent No. 13 spot on the 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities list released last month.
