SnoPUD’s Planet Power Supports Four Solar Projects & School Programs

Source: SnoPUD Press Release, September 15, 2011.  More than 3,000 Snohomish County PUD customers are now supporting solar demonstration projects by participating in the utility’s voluntary Planet Power green energy program. The PUD is finalizing plans for four additional projects to be installed this year. Eleven projects were completed in 2009 and 2010.  The program provides customers a way of making a meaningful difference by promoting renewable energy development.

“Our customers consistently ask us how they can support renewable energy in the community,” said Jessica Mitchell, PUD energy efficiency program manager.  “They’re excited to learn that $3 per month can bring these great solar projects to our communities. The new projects will provide clean, renewable energy to schools and non-profit organizations, while allowing the public to learn more about solar energy in real-world settings and creating work for local installers.”

With the set of new projects being finalized, the Planet Power has now supported 15 solar installations. The program also funds renewable energy curriculum at local schools.

The 2011 finalist projects are:

  • Lake Stevens High School – A 5 kilowatt solar array is planned atop the school’s performing arts center. An informational kiosk, sharing live data, will be located in a high-traffic common area. Students and families also will be able to access live solar data.
  • Carl Gipson Senior Center (Everett) – A solar energy system will provide clean, renewable solar energy for visitors to the center. The system is expected to provide enough energy to power the center’s computer lab and Wii tournament station.  A kiosk will display real-time solar data.
  • Edmonds Community College – A solar panel system is planned for an outdoor picnic shelter rooftop. The college plans to incorporate curriculum that will teach students to design solar installations, including mounting, electrical work and site location.
  • Future of Flight at Paine Field – A solar panel system is planned on the outdoor walkway to the aviation center’s special event deck facing Paine Field.  The energy produced by the array will help power the Future of Flight and enhance the experience of approximately 200,000 visitors per year. The live data kiosk will be part of the renewable energy exhibit.

Customers can enroll in Planet Power at any time.  They can either opt to contribute $3 or more each month as part of their utility bill payment or make a one-time payment of $15 or more. Every dollar contributed goes directly to operate the program, educate the community and increase the level of energy that is produced from renewable sources. Customers can enroll online, in person at any PUD office, or by calling the utility’s Energy Hotline at 425-783-1700.
