US Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu has announced up to $10 million is available in 2012 to demonstrate and deploy electric transportation technologies for cargo vehicles. The Vehicle Technologies Program is developing more energy efficient and environmentally friendly highway transportation technologies that will reduce petroleum utilization.
