Safeco Field is setting the green standard in North American sporting arenas

safeco-fieldSafeco Field is is on track for zero waste and is one of the greenest ballparks in the country thanks to waste diversion strategies implemented since 2006. Scott Jenkins, VP of Ballpark Operations has overseen a rise from 12% diversion rate in 2006 to the current rate of 86%.

Initially focusing on cardboard, paper and plastic, the program has expanded to include all compostable materials, scrap metals and cooking grease. The challenge has been getting fans to comply with the system. The compost from the ballpark is broken down and reused for landscaping around the stadium grounds. “Sustainability is full of identifying ways to do things better” says Jenkins.
