The State of Geologic Carbon Sequestration in the PNW: Subsurface Opportunities and Surface Obstacles
Can the Pacific Northwest be a carbon sink for North America? Hear from Oregon and Washington state geologists on past, current, and future carbon dioxide sequestration projects. Learn about the Pacific Northwest’s potential for geologic storage into basalt, policy needs, and next steps.

Will Gallin, Subsurface Program Manager, Washington Geological Survey
Will currently leads the Subsurface Program at the Washington Geological Survey, a division of the Department of Natural Resources. Previously, he worked as a carbon sequestration geologist and landslide hazards geologist. Prior to joining the Survey, he was a petroleum exploration geologist for Hess Corporation in Houston. He also works seasonally for the Wildland Fire Management Division of DNR.

Jason D. McClaughry, R.G., Geological Survey and Services Program Manager, Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries
Jason McClaughry is an Oregon Registered Professional Geologist and is the Program Manager for the Geological Survey and Services Program (GS&S) at the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI). He leads and manages a team of 20 exceptional scientists and geospatial analysts conducting fundamental and applied Earth Science mapping and research in the fields of Geology and Mineral Resources, Tsunami and Coastal Erosion, Earthquake and Seismic Hazards, Flood and Channel Migration, Landslide Inventory and Susceptibility, Decarbonization Studies, and Lidar Mapping. As GS&S Program Manager, Jason is responsible for fiscal oversight and management of biennial expenditures between 9 and 20 million dollars in State of Oregon General Fund, Federal Funds, and Other Funds. Additional duties include serving as DOGAMI’s Agency Liaison to the Legislative Commission on Indian Services, connecting the Agency with Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribes.

Annika Wallendahl, Principal, Geosyntec Consultants
Annika Wallendahl is a principal engineer from Geosyntec’s Seattle office with more than 20 years of experience serving clients in the industrial, commercial, private equity, and public sectors. A licensed professional engineer and geologist, Annika is a leader within Geosyntec’s nationwide Energy Transition and Carbon Advisory teams. Annika holds an MBA from Western Governors University, an MS in Geology from Åbo Akademi University in Finland, and a BS in Earth Sciences from Montana State University.

Isabellah von Trapp, Senior Hydrogeologist, Geosyntec Consultants
Isabellah von Trapp is a licensed hydrogeologist from Geosyntec’s Seattle office who helps clients explore and develop the relationship between their water and energy systems. Her work includes water supply development, water rights permitting, aquifer characterization, as well as evaluating and implementing low temperature geothermal energy projects. Isabellah’s notable projects include feasibility assessment, design, permitting, and implementation of open-loop ground source heat pump retrofits at the Washington State Public Health Lab and the Ocosta School District.
