California leads with almost half of total venture investments. Massachusetts was second, but New York end up second by the end of 2010. Texas ranked fourth and Illinois was in fifth place.
Washington ranked sixth in the nation with $634 million raised in venture capital in 2010. For the period between 1970 and 2010, venture capitalists invested $15.8 billion in 837 Washington companies. Public companies headquartered in Washington that were once venture-backed account for 778,579 US jobs and $256 billion in US revenue. Washington ranks fourth in jobs and second in revenues for venture-backed companies headquartered in the state. One US job was created for every $20,293 of venture capital invested in the state.
