Investors Want a Greener Microsoft

Shareholder activist Harrington Investments wants Microsoft’s board to established a Board Committee on Environmental Sustainability to go beyond legal compliance to help the software giant reduce its impact on the environment, looking at how the company uses energy, generates waste and impacts global warming and limited natural resources.

Harrington notes that in 2009, Microsoft was bumped from the NASDAQ Sustainability Index due to “inadequate disclosure of quantitative environmental metrics,” according to Microsoft’s proxy statement to investors.
