King County Executive Dow Constantine will host the second annual King County Executive’s Small Business Awards to recognize and celebrate the significance of small businesses to the King County economy. To be eligible businesses must:
- Be located in King County
- Have 50 or fewer employees
- Have been in business for at least 3 years
- Be nominated by a chamber, city, or business association. The program cannot accept self-nominations.
There are seven award categories. They are:
- Small Business of the Year
- Minority Small Business of the Year
- Woman Small Business of the Year
- Exporting Small Business of the Year
- Green/Sustainable Small Business of the Year
- Workforce Development Small Business of the Year
- Rural Small Business of the Year
The definition of the Green/Sustainable Small Business of the Year is as follows: “King County is a hotbed of innovation in the field of sustainability and has a rich history of environmental stewardship. This award recognizes the small business that has achieved excellence in the creation and implementation of sustainable business practices. Practices include Waste and Recycling programs, water stewardship, energy management, efficiency in the Built Environment, or any other significant effort designed to limit the way a business impacts our local environment.” The 2011 Winners in this category were:
- Winner: General Biodiesel – Seattle
- Finalist: Eco Cartridge Store – Kirkland
- Finalist: WorldCNG – Kent
